Number Sense, NumBots and TTRS morning

Last week, we celebrated the children's engagement and success in Number Sense, NumBots and Times Table Rock Stars with a fun morning of maths.

Year 5 Trip to York

Year 5 had a fantastic trip to York! We met at Newcastle Central Station bright and early, full of excitement as we boarded the train to York.

Our day began with a visit to the Jorvik Viking Centre, where we learnt all about Viking life, including the items they made and traded. Afterward, we enjoyed a walk through the city to admire the impressive York Minster before settling down in the park for a picnic lunch.

In the afternoon, we explored the York Railway Museum, where we saw a fascinating range of trains, including a Japanese bullet train, the Mallard, and a replica of George Stephenson’s famous Rocket.

It was a wonderful day and all the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

Installation Art

In Year 5, we have been exploring installation art. We studied a range of artists and examples, discussing how installation art can be experienced from different perspectives. We worked both independently and collaboratively to create our own pieces of artwork. We experimented with a variety of techniques and materials, including collage and painting, to develop our ideas and express our creativity.

Year 5 Parent Session

This week, Year 5 children welcomed their family members into school for a fun science-themed session. We began with a warm-up quiz all about forces, followed by making our own parachutes, which we then took outside to test. Many of the parachutes were very successful—helped along by the breeze! Thank you very much to all the parents who managed to come along.

Rugby Skills

This half term, Year 5 have enjoyed weekly coaching sessions to develop their rugby skills. They have been working on their throwing and catching techniques and have played a range of tag games to help them learn how to run, dodge, and move effectively in space.

Year 5 Violin Progress

This half term, Year 5 have made a great start to their weekly violin lessons. They have learned how to hold the violin and bow properly, identified the names of the strings, and begun to read basic musical notation. They are now able to play some simple tunes and are excited to keep building on their skills in the weeks ahead.

Building Bridges in Year 5

In Year 5 Design Technology, we have been exploring different types of bridges, including beam, arch, and truss designs. As part of our investigation, we tested which structures are the strongest and most stable. Using a variety of materials, we built and experimented with different bridge models. As a class, we worked together to construct our own truss bridge using wood. This involved carefully measuring and cutting the pieces at specific angles with tools such as rulers, set squares, and saws. It was a great hands-on experience that helped us understand both the design and engineering behind strong bridges.

Year 5 Visit Harehope Quarry

Today, Year 5 took a trip to Harehope Quarry to carry out a river study as part of our geography topic on rivers. It was a fantastic day filled with hands-on learning. The children measured the width and depth of the River Wear, tested its velocity, and explored a range of river features. Everyone showed great enthusiasm and resilience—bravely stepping into the water and approaching each activity with a positive attitude!
