Our day began with a visit to the Jorvik Viking Centre, where we learnt all about Viking life, including the items they made and traded. Afterward, we enjoyed a walk through the city to admire the impressive York Minster before settling down in the park for a picnic lunch.

In the afternoon, we explored the York Railway Museum, where we saw a fascinating range of trains, including a Japanese bullet train, the Mallard, and a replica of George Stephenson’s famous Rocket.

It was a wonderful day and all the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

Our day began with a vibrant costume parade, followed by a whole‑school assembly featuring a choir performance of “Naughty” from Matilda.  In the morning, teachers swapped around classes, each bringing a wrapped, brand‑new book to read and then add to the class library. Each class also enjoyed a dedicated library session, giving the children the opportunity to explore the wide range of books available.

In the afternoon, Year 5 and Year 6 buddied up with our youngest pupils in Nursery, Reception and Year 1 to share a range of picture books. Families were also welcomed into school to take part in the Great Greenside Book Quiz, which encouraged collaborative reading knowledge and friendly competition.

Well done to all of the children for taking part in such a fun and enjoyable day! As always, we encourage all children to continue to read regularly at home, exploring new authors, genres and stories that spark their imagination.

The children were excited as they got the chance to sit inside the fire engine and explore all the different equipment that firefighters wear to keep them safe. 

The highlight of the afternoon was definitely getting to have a go with the powerful hose! Everyone was amazed by how strong the water was.

A huge thank you to Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue for taking the time to visit us. We all learned so much and had a fantastic time! It was a truly memorable experience for our children.

After the reading, each child got a reading pack to take home, which included two books and a fun colouring activity. We also learnt some catchy new songs that the kids are excited to practice at home. It was a great way to spark a love for reading and creativity in our little ones!

The children enjoyed looking at his uniform, mailbag and the items he uses while out on his rounds. They listened carefully and asked questions about his job and how he makes sure post gets to the right homes.

Postman Lee kindly brought along special envelopes and stamps, and the children had lots of fun sticking on their stamps and posting their letters, just like real postmen and postwomen.

Using what they had learned from Postman Lee, the children confidently took on the role of a postman in the role play area, delivering letters and parcels just like the real thing.

Emily talked to the children about her job as a baker and explained how she helps people by making delicious cakes and treats for her bakery. The children were keen to learn about the different tools and equipment Emily uses in her shop. 

She kindly brought along some of her baking equipment for us to explore. The children particularly enjoyed looking at the whisk and had lots of fun pretending to mix ingredients, just like real bakers!

To make the visit even more special, Baker Emily treated us to some of her tasty creations for everyone to try. They were absolutely delicious and enjoyed by all.

Nurse Faye came to visit our class and told us all about her important job. She showed us her uniform and explained how she helps people when they are feeling unwell or need medical care. The children were fascinated to hear about the different ways she looks after her patients.

We even had some hands-on practice! Nurse Faye taught us how to apply a bandage, and everyone had a turn practising on a teddy bear. The children also used a stethoscope to listen carefully to their own heartbeats and tried out a special light to check eyes, just like real nurses do.

We had great fun learning about this important role and have loved continuing our learning in the classroom by pretending to be nurses in our role play area.
